Workwear Care: How to Make Protective Clothing Last Longer

Why does proper care matter?

Workwear may be made from specialist materials and have specific design features, so improper washing or drying can damage the fabric and affect certain protective properties. Always follow the care label and the manufacturer’s instructions first.

Washing

  • Before washing, empty the pockets, close the zips and fasten any hook-and-loop closures.
  • Use the temperature indicated on the label; if the label specifies 40 °C, do not wash at a higher temperature.
  • Protect reflective inserts and functional coatings by using a gentle wash cycle.
  • Only use strong bleach if expressly permitted by the manufacturer.

Drying and ironing

Dry the garment according to the instructions on the label. Excessive heat can damage synthetic fibres, coatings and reflective elements. When ironing, follow the indicated temperature and do not iron directly over reflective surfaces.

Stain treatment

Treat fresh stains as soon as possible, but first test the cleaning product on a less visible area. In the case of oil, chemicals or other hazardous substances, follow the employer’s procedure; do not automatically place the garment in a household washing machine.

Storage and inspection

Store clean, dry garments in a well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. After washing, check the seams, zips, reflective elements and any signs of damage. If the protective function of the garment is in doubt, replace it before use or consult the responsible person.
