Safety helmets: how to choose the right one?
Why is choosing the right helmet important?
A safety helmet can provide protection against falling objects, impacts and certain workplace hazards. It can only perform its function properly if you choose a type suited to the risks of the job and use it correctly.
What should you check when buying?
- The helmet should be suitable for the working environment and for the intended use specified in the manufacturer’s documentation.
- The headband should fit securely without being too tight.
- The helmet should not shift when bending forward or moving.
- Accessories such as face shields, hearing protection or lamp holders should only be used with compatible systems.
Standard markings
The EN 397 marking applies to industrial safety helmets, but the exact performance levels and additional requirements should always be checked on the helmet marking and in the conformity documentation. In the case of electrical hazards, it is particularly important to ensure that the selected model is certified for that specific risk; a general safety helmet does not automatically provide electrical protection.
When should you replace it?
Replace the helmet immediately after an impact, crack, deformation or other damage. Take the manufacturer’s specified service life, the condition of the material, UV exposure, chemicals and frequency of use into account.
Quick check before use
Inspect the shell, headband, fastening components and accessories. Do not drill, repaint or modify the helmet, as this may alter its protective properties.
