How to Choose Safety Shoes – Complete Guide

Why are the right safety shoes important?

Protective footwear must match the hazards of the working environment. The wrong size, an unsuitable sole or missing protective features can cause discomfort and increase the level of risk.

What do the S1, S2 and S3 classes mean?

When assessing safety footwear classifications, always refer to the specific product marking and documentation. In general:

  • S1: closed heel area, antistatic properties and an energy-absorbing heel.
  • S2: includes the basic S1 requirements, plus requirements for resistance of the upper to water penetration and water absorption.
  • S3: includes the S2 requirements, plus penetration resistance of the sole and an appropriate tread pattern.

Detailed markings, such as metal-free construction, heat resistance, slip resistance or special sole protection, may vary by model.

How to choose the right size

Try the shoes on with the socks you intend to wear. There should be enough room in front of the toes, the heel should not slip, and the shoes should not pinch the foot. Always choose the size according to the size chart for the specific model.

Where will you use them?

Different features may be important in a workshop, outdoors, in wet conditions, on ladders or near chemicals. In addition to the protection class, check the slip resistance of the sole and the manufacturer’s limitations for use.

When should you replace them?

Replace the footwear if the sole, upper, stitching, fastening or toe protection is damaged, or if the protective properties can no longer be reliably verified. There is no single replacement interval that applies to every model.
