High-visibility clothing: when is it mandatory and which to choose?

Why is visibility important?

In busy areas, on construction sites, during loading work or in poor lighting conditions, workwear should help ensure that the wearer can be seen in time. High-visibility clothing does not replace proper workplace safety measures, but it can be an important part of personal protection.

When might high-visibility clothing be required?

The required clothing should be determined based on the working environment, vehicle traffic, lighting conditions and the workplace risk assessment. For roadwork or work carried out near traffic, employer requirements and the rules of the specific worksite must also be followed.

What should you consider when choosing?

  • Fluorescent material can improve visibility during the day, while reflective strips can improve visibility in darkness or in vehicle headlights.
  • The clothing should be the correct size for the task and should not be covered by other garments or equipment.
  • Check the standard, performance class and conditions of use stated on the product label and in the documentation.
  • If the reflective strips are damaged or heavily soiled, visibility may be reduced.

Waistcoat, jacket or full outfit?

For short, light-duty tasks, a high-visibility waistcoat may often be sufficient. In cold weather or for outdoor work, a high-visibility jacket, trousers or complete workwear set may provide better protection and comfort. Always choose according to the working conditions.
